Exam Pattern of GATE and Syllabus for Computer Science

Graduate aptitude test in engineering (GATE), is an all Indian examination conducted by the Indian institute of science and all Indian institutes of technology to test the overall knowledge of a candidate in a particular subject of engineering or sciences. The candidates are selected for various post graduation programs (M TEC, PhD, ME), in India institutes of science or in Indian institute of technology (IITs). The selected candidates can also take jobs in leading public sector undertakings such Indian oil corporation , power grid of India , national thermal power corporation etc . 

A candidate can opt one of the 22 subjects for GATE test. Besides all engineering branches, the test can also be taken in life sciences, ecology and evolution, geology and geophysics, architecture and planning, food technology, and biotechnology. A candidate can select any subject for test, but it is recommended that he or she should stick to the subject of graduation degree for better preparation and result.

The test is held only in one paper of 3 hours duration. The test contains 65 questions of 100 marks. The questions are set on both multiple choice pattern and numerical answer type. The test is online computer based test where question come on the random manner on the computer screen. The candidates have to answer the question and use mouse and virtual keypad to answer the numerical question. After the end of the 3 hours period, the computer will automatically stop the test by closing the screen.


Out of the 65 question, 10 questions are designed to test the general aptitude of a candidate. Most of the questions come from the core subject, which is opted for the test by the candidate. The multiple types question is of 1 or 2 marks. They have four options, out of which a candidate has to tick the correct answer. Numerical questions are also of 1 or 2 marks, but they have no choice of answer and a candidate has to enter the answer by using keypad on the screen.
